Abstract

754,895. Sink-and-float separation process. METALLGES AKT.-GES. Aug. 9, 1954 [Aug. 17, 1953], No. 23110/54. Class 82(2). A sink and float separation process comprises introducing the materials to be separated and the heavy medium separately in a turbulent-free manner into a trough of cross-section forming a segment of a circle through a conical trough in a direction parallel to the axis of the trough, lifting the sunken material substantially to the level of the heavy medium, and removing the floating material by flowing through a conical overflow in the direction of the axis of the trough. As shown, the material is fed into a conical trough 6 which opens near the bottom of a segmental trough 4 having a paddle wheel 14 with blades 12, which may be rectangular, as shown, or trapezoidal or twisted, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), set at an acute angle to the trough in the direction of rotation of the wheel, by which the heavy material is removed. Medium is supplied to the conical trough through apertures 42 from a chamber 40. The heavy material is discharged into a shoot 32 and the light material by way of an opening 24 situated at the top of a discharge member 20 which is divided into two portions 26 and 28 of different slope. To prevent the outlet becoming dammed, the width of the outlet is adjustable so that the velocity of flow may be controlled. A pair of curved baffles 36 on the inner side of the paddle wheel prevents turbulence on the surface of the heavy medium due to the motion of the wheel.
