Abstract

A porous sponge material, particularly for use as a printing member, and having an interconnected cell structure, is prepared by cohering, by heat and pressure, finely divided particles of synthetic rubber admixed with a blowing agent, in such a manner that at least some of the cells produced intercommunicate through passages formed by disruption of the cell walls by the gas released by the blowing agent. The synthetic rubber may comprise acrylic nitrilebutadiene copolymer, neoprene, or a butadiene-styrene copolymer. A product of improved strength may be obtained by incorporating in the mixture 5 to 100, preferably 15 to 50, parts by weight of a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin per 100 parts of synthetic rubber. The resin may comprise a cashew-nut shell oil-phenol-aldehyde polymer, or other phenol-aldehyde or urea-aldehyde synthetic resin, or shellac, polyvinyl acetate or chloride, or a styrene-butadiene copolymer. Fully vulcanized rubber particles may be used in such mixture. The manufacture of a printing roll and a printing plate is described (see Group V).
