Abstract
754,214. Heating and cooling or drying gases by direct contact with granular material. NETTEL, F. Jan. 13, 1954 [Jan. 15, 1953; Dec. 17, I953], No. 1002/54. Classes 34(1) and 64(1). Apparatus for treating gases or vapours comprises a shell 1, Fig. 1, having inlet and outlet conduits 2, 3 respectively for said gases &c., and inlet and outlet conduits 4, 5 for a granular material. The granular material may constitute a heat or cold carrier or a drying-, cleaning-, condensing-, chemical-, or catalytic-agent. The granular material is distributed within the shell by thrower wheels 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, the material being fed to the lower wheel by a perforated plate 10. The apparatus also comprises a second perforated plate 10<SP>1</SP>, perforated sheet metal rings 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and abrasion resistant inserts 6, 7, 61, 71. Additional material such as a wetting liquid may be fed-into the wheel 14 by a pipe 15. In a modification, see Fig. 2, (not shown), the members 6,7,6<SP>1</SP>,7<SP>1</SP> are replaced by rebounding rings and the members 11, 11<SP>1</SP> are dispensed with. The plates 10 are supported in the shell by circum. ferentially spaced arms and may be of solid construction. In both the above embodiments thrower wheels may be provided with radial distributing blades and an outlet pipe may be arranged in the bottom of the shell for surplus water. Again, an additional gas inlet or outlet conduit may be disposed in the shell between the members 10 as shown in Fig. 3. A. beat exchanger, Fig. 3, for transferring heat from a gas at substantially atmospheric pressure to compressed air comprises two centrifugal machines 1, 1<SP>1</SP> which are arranged in series for the flow of granulated material therethrough, the said material being heated by the gases in the member 1 and imparting its heat to the air in the member 1<SP>1</SP>. Rotary valves 16, 16<SP>1</SP> are provided to feed the material into the member 1<SP>1</SP> and thence into a perforated pipe 17 surrounded by a casing 19 having a valve 23 for the with. drawal of dust particles. Under certain conditions the valves may be dispensed with and a gravity feed employed. Compressed air is introduced into the circuit through pipes 18, 21 in order to re-circulate the material to the member 1. A gas drying plant, Fig. 4, embodies two centrifugal machines 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and a heat exchanger 35. The members 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 35 are arranged in parallel with a fan 30 and in series with one another for the passage of granulated material therethrough. An electric heater coil or a steam coil 33 are arranged between the members 30 and 1<SP>1</SP>. Dry compressed air is fed to a<SP>p</SP> ejector 20 to feed the granulated material from the member 35 to the member 1. The granulated material may comprise metals, ceramics, carbides, sand, aluminium or silica gel.
