Classes 7(1) and 7(2) An internal combustion operated free piston machine comprises a free-piston assembly including a power piston and a compressor piston rigidly coupled together and slidable in a 'power and a compressor cylinder respectively and a pneumatic accumulator arranged to provide an air cushion which is compressed during the outward strokes of the piston assembly and which restores the energy thus accumulated to the piston assembly during the inward strokes thereof and the pneumatic accumulator is provided with a discharge aperture and means responsive to the reciprocating movement of the piston assembly to maintain the aperture closed during the reciprocating movement and to open the aperture when the reciprocating movement ceases and the means are responsive to variations in the pressure of the air cushion and are adapted to maintain the aperture closed while such pressure variations take place and to open the aperture when the pressure variations cease. The Figs. show a wholly-free-piston gas generator supplying power gas to a turbine or other machine. The pneumatic accumulator chamber 4b comprises a discharge aperture 10 controlled by a piston. While the generator is running the aperture is closed but is opened by the spring 16 when the generator stops. This obviates the pistons moving inwardly and jamming in the case of an accidental stoppage of the generator. An aperture 15 may be provided in the wall of the cylinder instead of in the piston as shown. It is known to discharge the accumulator by means of a valve by operating a stopping member provided for this purpose and which for instance stops the injection of fuel. Semifree piston engines in which only are dead point and generally the inner one is free from mechanical control are referred'to.
