Class 124 A portable spinning rivet hammer comprises a housing, an air actuated impellor rotatably mounted in the housing, a peen element rotatably and axially slidably mounted in the housing and spring-urged against the hammer, the peen element being rotated by means driven by the impellor. As shown, a housing 12 having a handle with air control mechanism mounted thereon has an air actuated impellor 68 driving, through gearing, a rod 114 carrying a gear wheel 162 which engages teeth on a gear 160 mounted on a splined portion 158 of a peen element 18 urged by a spring 172 against a hammer piston 140 driven by the exhaust air from the impellor. The gear 160 is long so that it may engage the gear wheel 163 while the peen element is being reciprocated by the hammer piston. The impellor and hammer may be mounted in tandem in the housing. The speed of the impellor and the impact of the hammer piston may be controlled by opening or closing a vent 82 in a cap 80 on a tube extending from the impellor chamber to atmosphere.
