Abstract

752,615. Bookbinding. ' ESSELTE AKTIEBOLAG. Aug. 20, 1954 [Aug. 21, 1953; Nov. 5, 1953], No. 24263/54. Class 16 A form of bound book, the leaves of which are initially separate at the back, comprises a set of leaves 1 together with cover sheets 2 on each side, -similarly separate and preferably of stiffer material, secured together by means of a layer 4 of an open fabric of natural or artificial fibres, perforated paper, plastic sheet or the like, the side edges of which are flush with the outer faces of the cover sheets 2, to which the back edges only of the leaves 1 and cover sheets 2 are caused to adhere by means of a first layer 3 of adhesive and a second covering layer 5 of adhesive being united with the first layer 3 to embed the fabric layer 4. The layer 4 is preferably of natural fibre twill or woven glass fibres and the adhesive comprises a thermoplastic to seep into the twill or through the glass fibres. The covering layer 5 of thermoplastic may be patterned while hot as by a suitable roller and the layer may be coloured and may have printing applied directly or on a stripsecured across the back. When the layer 3 is applied, the leaves may be spread so that some of the adhesive penetrates between them. Batches of books, particularly used books, may be bound together, the backs being trimmed as necessary, coating the back with the first layer of adhesive for securing a continuous fabric layer applied either before or after the first layer of adhesive and then coating with the second layer of adhesive. After any printing or patterning or strips have been secured across the assembly, the individual books are divided by severing between adjacent cover sheets.
