Abstract

Classes 122(1) and 122(5) In a high-pressure reciprocating pump or compressor the piston 25 is a fluidtight fit in a sealing portion AB of the cylinder liner 26 and the portion is surrounded in a member such as a gland 32, with a clearance that is sufficient to accommodate the thermal radial expansion of the liner and is sealed against excess of fluid pressure by a seal 35, at the inner end adjacent the point A. The inner part of the liner 26 has an enlarged bore D<SP>1</SP> and is provided with radial apertures 36 so that its outer surface is subjected to fluid pressure, leakage from the body 11 of the pump being prevented by a further seal 30 at the inner end of the liner. The axial position of the seal 35 may be adjusted by the gland 32 through a cap nut 34. The piston 25 is formed as a cap plunger 51 secured, by a pin 46, to a rod 40 which extends in the plunger with a clearance substantially equal to the radial expansion of the rod when subjected to the maximum operating compression. The cross-sectional area of the sealing portion AB of the liner is not more than the cross-sectional area of the co-operating portion of the cap plunger 51. The rod 40 has a spherical end 41 supported in a spherical bearing 42 mounted with lateral play 44 in a cross head 43.
