Abstract

752,566. Pulse storage circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1954 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 2334/54. Class 40 (6). [Also in Group XIX] A system for storage of differentially timed character-representing electrical impulses comprises a matrix of two electrode gas discharge tubes. The storage system shown for receiving a number from a punched record card 10 (which number may be later read out repeatedly, e.g. in a calculation process such as multiplication by repeated addition), comprises a matrix of elements each consisting of a gas-filled switch tube S and a storage tube T, the columns corresponding to decimal denominations and the rows to different digits. As the card is fed by rollers 11, digit-representing differentially timed positive impulses are supplied from sensing brushes 12 to respective column lines A, B ... N. A capacity-coupled distributer 25, including a condenser element 26 rotated in synchronism with the card feed rollers, supplies the output of an r.f. oscillator 27 in turn to the row lines 9, 8, 7 ... 0 connected to external electrodes d of the tubes S. This r.f. energy produces an auxiliary r.f. discharge which ionizes the gas filling in the tubes and allows flow of low voltage direct current between internal electrodes a, b. Thus that tube T in each column which corresponds to the digit recorded in the corresponding column of the card is fixed, the potential supplied by source 20 through reset switch 21 being sufficient to maintain conduction in the tube after the associated switching tube is extinguished. For read-out, switch 28 is closed to cause a further series of switching tubes OA, OB ... ON to connect lines A, B ... N to output lines Oa, Ob ... On, the distributer-controlled tubes S operating to sense the tubes T in a column in turn so that a differentially timed negative pulse corresponding to the fixed tube - is supplied to the output and energises a magnet 30 of e.g. a card-punching unit. Other means for supplying r.f. energy may be used, e.g. an oscillator for each digit position controlled by a ring circuit.
