In a chicken brooder, a hollow hood 5, a partition 7 closing its bottom, and a ceiling 10 supported below the partition by a side wall 22 depending from the rim of the hood, enclose spaces filled with heat-insulating material 6, e.g. slag wool, and heat-retaining material 8, e.g. dry sand. The hood is supported by legs 9; a pliable curtain 18, e.g. of blanket material, extends below the side wall 22; an electric heat source 11 is provided in the brooder space; and one or more air induction tubes 13 lead from outside the brooder to the vicinity of the heat source. The tubes 13 lead to a space inside a frusto-conical shield 12. A ring 17 retains sand or gravel on the floor.
