Abstract
752,258. Moulding pulp articles. TRIGGS, W. W. (Keyes Fibre Co.), May 11, 1954, No. 13730/54. Class 87(2) Egg cartons are made from a slurry of fibre and water by shaping them on die formers by suction, drying them and then pressing them between dies, in the presence of heat and moisture to an extent only sufficient to remove the warpage and distortion of the drying. The articles are first moulded from pulp by apparatus as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, in which 13 represents a tank containing pulp through which female die formers 10 on the ends of hollow arms 11 are rotated step-by-step, pulp articles being formed on them by suction. A male die former 14 oscillates in synchronism with the movement of the arms 11, at the end of a hollow arm 15, and transfers the articles to a conveyer 19 which carries it to a succession of conveyers 20, 22, 23 which take it through a drier 21 and a gate 41 to the press. The dies 24, 25 of the press, which may be steam-heated, are designed to restore the dried article to its original moulded shape and to give it a smooth finish, besides, if desired, impressing extra designs on it. Water or stiffening, colouring or other materials may be sprayed on the article before it is pressed. The die 25 is raised and lowered by a hydraulic piston and cylinder 29, 29<1> controlled by a valve 30. A motor-driven camshaft 35 reciprocates a valve stem 40, through a cam and lever 36, 38, and causes hydraulic fluid to be admitted alternately to the top and bottom of the cylinder 29<1> through pipes 31, 32. The gate 41 ensures that the dried articles are fed singly in time with the opening and closing of the press and comprises a rocking member with depending portions 42, 43 operated from the camshaft 35 through a cam 50, lever 48, and links 46, 45a. The pressed article is delivered on a transfer device 51 which deposits it on a conveyer 52. The device 51 is mounted on a carriage 53 which is reciprocated in guides 56 by the oscillation of a lever 57 about a pivot 59 carried by the operation of a hydraulic piston and cylinder 61, 62 controlled by a valve 66 which is cam-operated, similarly to the valve 30, from the camshaft 35, in synchronism with the die 25. As the carriage 53 approaches its outer position a slotted yoke 73, fixed to a pivot 72 which connects the carriage 53 and the transfer device 51, embraces a stationary pin 74 and the device 51 is thus caused to tilt and deposit the pressed article on the conveyer 52. Vacuum and/or compressed air may be supplied to the dies through a pipe 34, timed by vacuum mechanism' to co-operate with the movement of the dies so that the article is transferred to the male upper die as the press opens and dislodged therefrom for delivery in the fully open position. The reshaping press may be adapted for use with existing pulp moulding machines.
