Abstract

109,314. O'Neill, F. Sept. 13, 1916. Blowing; cutting off excess of metal.-Relates to a semi-automatic machine for manufacturing glass bottles &c. and in which the blank moulds and blowing-moulds are arranged on two synchronously rotating carriers, and comprises an arrangement whereby the completed blanks and the blown articles are positioned at the same side of the machine within easy reach of a single operator, so that the operator may remove the blown articles from the blow moulds and transfer thereto the completed blanks from the blank moulds. The blank moulds 11 are carried on an intermittently rotating carrier 2, Fig. 3, geared to a second carrier 5, on which the blow moulds are pivoted. An operator stationed at the position A places a quantity of glass in each blank mould as it arrives, by means of a punty, with which he also temporarily opens an air valve, thus starting a cycle of operations which are automatically controlled by a system of pneumatically-operated valves and pistons, the cycle of operations terminating after a forward movement of the carrier. During this cycle, shears 35 operated by a piston within a cylinder 37 sever the glass from the punty, the blank mould is locked in closed position, a blowing-head 62, Fig. 4, closes the top of the blank mould, air is admitted for an adjustable interval of time to press the molten glass into the blank and neck moulds, the blowing-head and mould lock are removed, and, after the neck portion of the blank has set, the indenting-plunger 68 is withdrawn, the period of contact of the plunger with the glass being capable of adjustment. The mould then moves to the position B, a cap 122, Fig. 5, descends upon the mould stationed thereat, and compressed air is automatically admitted from a pipe 124 to the cavity in the blank, which is thereby expanded. The cap 122 rises, and the mould moves to position C and is there opened by a stationary cam 17. A second operator then takes hold of a pair of tongs 20 attached to the neck moulds and transfers the blank to an open blow mould 25 at an adjacent position F on the carrier 5, inverting the blank during the transfer, and then returns the tongs 20 to their former position. After placing the blank in the mould, the second operator depresses a pedal 32 connected to an air valve and thus slightly rotates an otherwise stationary cam 30, causing the mould to close and remain closed until again presented to the operator by the rotation of the carrier 5. At the same time that the cap 122, Fig. 5, is lowered on to the blank mould 11, a blowing- head 132, Fig. 2, is lowered on to a blow mould 26 stationed at a position I, and the completion of the blowing is effected on the bottle contained therein. At the next station J, the mould is allowed by the cam 30 to open, and the blown bottle is removed, the cycle of operations being repeated at the various stations and the carriers moved forward a step each time the first operator actuates the valve 47 by means of his punty. The neck moulds, instead of being portable, may be permanently mounted on the blank moulds and may be opened, either by means of a pedal, or automatically by air pressure, the blank being transferred by means of pincers.
