Abstract

752,133. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems; valves. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 27, 1954 [May 7, 1953], No. 12180/54. Class 135. A fluid pumping system including a regulating device for maintaining the pump output constant irrespective of the fluid temperature comprises temperature-responsive orifice means interposed between the inlet and the outlet of the device to vary the flow in accordance with temperature changes of the fluid and means responsive to the pressure drop across the orifice means operatively connected to an element controlling the pump. As shown, the regulating device 40, Figs. 1, 2, comprises a casing 48 having an inlet 38, an outlet 46 and connections 42, 44 to opposite sides of a pressure-responsive diaphragm 26 made from material having a low coefficient of expansion, e.g. that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Invar," and a threaded sleeve 76 and an adjusting screw 84 made of a material having a high coefficient of expansion, e.g. aluminium alloy. The orifice means comprises an annulus 98 formed between a knife-edge 72 on the sleeve 76 and a conical surface 54 of the casing and a port 74 in the sleeve which coacts with the conical tip 86 of the screw 84. A casing groove 82 coacts with the lug 80 on the sleeve 76 to permit adjustment between the sleeve and the screw 84. The diaphragm 26 is connected by an adjustable rod 20 and a lever 18 to a valve 16 in the supply line 12 to a turbine 10 driving the pump 34. If, after the adjustment of the pump output in accordance with the temperature by means of the screw 84 and the rod 20, the temperature of the pump fluid should change, e.g. increase, the pump will unload, and its delivery increase. At the same time, the parts 76, 84 will expand relatively to the casing 48, restricting flow to the annulus 98 and the port 74 to produce a pressure differential across the diaphragm 26 which adjusts the valve 16 to decrease the supply of operating fluid to the turbine. The turbine speed and that of the pump then decreases to adjust the pump output to its previous vaule.
