752,130. Photo-electric record sensing apparatus. GOLDSTERN, N. March 29, 1954, No. 9163/54. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XIX] A statistical record-card machine is controlled by record cards, Fig. 1, perforated with a number of uniform holes in patterns which may be easily read visibly as numerals or letters, and in which the number of holes is different in each case so that a photo-electric card-sensing arrangement as shown in Fig. 2 may evaluate each different character on the card 3 according to the amount of light passed to the photoelectric cell 5 from the light source. The varying amount of light falling on the cell 5 according to the number of holes contained in each character varies the voltage or current output of the cell accordingly and causes selective operation of one of a number of relays 7. The relay operated presses down the key of machine 8 corresponding to the figure concerned. The input of the amplifier is constituted by the grid-cathode of an amplifier tube, the output of which comprises a condenser shunted by a resistor. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the condenser is connected with the control electrodes of an electronic switch which may be embodied in an electron-beam tube 9. The electron beam 10 is arranged to move over a set of contacts 11, 12, each of which is connected with a relay. The operating circuit of each relay is closed by the electron beam focused on the contact associated therewith.
