Abstract

752,112. Making magnetic cores; shearing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 10, 1954 [Feb. 17, 1953], No. 3927/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). To assemble a coil on a closed laminated magnetic core, the core is cut at one or more places by forcing a wedge-shaped blade through the laminations after the core has been impregnated with a lubricant. The lubricant may be oil having a viscosity above 1200 centipose at the cutting temperature. The laminations 1, e.g. formed from cold rolled silicon steel strip, are impregnated at an elevated temperature and cut at normal temperature or are impregnated at normal temperature and refrigerated before cutting. The lubricant may be water which is frozen for the cutting operation; or a solid such as naphthalene, camphene, or camphor which can be melted for impregnation solidified for cutting and then removed by vaporization. The laminations are subsequently bonded together with a plastic. Synthetic resins such as epoxy resins may serve as a lubricant and bonding agent so eliminating the operation of removing the lubricant. The blade 6 is of high carbon tool steel hardened to at least Rockwell C60 and may be operated hydraulically. The apex angle is 35-55 degrees and the apex is blunted to about 0.001 inch radius. Specification 545,229, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
