Abstract

751,958. Viscosimeters. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 1, 1954 [Dec. 12, 1952], No. 31596/52. Class 106 (2). In a device for determining the viscosity of thixotropic and non-Newtonian liquids, a body, moving in the liquid, is acted on by some varying external force other than the reaction of the liquid, and its motion and the magnitude of the varying force are recorded against time. A base, Fig. 1, supports a platform 5 and a pillar 6, and a disc-shaped body 12 perforated with holes 13 is fixed to the end of a rod 11 which is suspended from the pillar by a helical spring 9. Attached to the rod 11 by an arm 20 is a stylus which co-operates with a drum 17 driven by a synchronous motor 16 so that as the body falls through the liquid under test, which is in a container 1 surrounded by a thermal jacket 2, a graph of the effective external force acting on the body against time is produced. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a stirrer 21 fixed to gears 23 is acted on by a varying external couple. The cord 26 is wound up by a handle 24 until a spring 29 is fully extended and the handle is then released. The stirrer then rotates under the decreasing torque produced by the spring. Simultaneously a stylus, attached by an arm 34 to a carrier 32 which is attached to the cord, co-operates with a drum 35 driven by a synchronous motor 37 to produce a graph as before.
