Abstract

751,837. Helicopters. LUALDI, C. Nov. 4, 1954 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 31925/54. Class 4. In a gyroscopic device for stabilizing a helicopter rotor, every blade 2 is provided with a stabilizing mass 8 fixed to one end of a flexible constraint member 7, the other end of the latter being anchored to a rigid constraint member 5 spaced from and connected with the longitudinal axis of the blade concerned. A hub 4 is universally mounted at 1 on the drive-shaft, and supports stub shafts 3 mounting the blades 2. The members 5 are rigidly attached to the hub. In the case of a three-bladed rotor, Fig. 5 (not shown), the members 5 are directly attached to the blades at their roots, or to the stub shafts 3. The members 7 may be wire, rope, or chain, and their length may be variable in flight. Further masses may be rigidly attached to members 5, as may small aerodynamic surfaces. The dimensions and masses of the system are chosen so as to correct short period disturbances, but not to nullify control movements, e.g. cyclic and collective pitch change.
