Abstract

751,591. Propelling aircraft and ships. VIBRANE CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1953 [Feb. 19, 1952 ; March 11, 1952], Nos. 4411/52 and 6345/52. Classes 4 and 114. [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXX] A device for propelling a flowable substance comprises a flexible member in contact with the substance and means for effecting displacement of a portion of the member alternately in opposite directions out of the plane of the member to produce undulations along the member from the portion toward a free edge thereof, thus propelling the substance swept by said undulations, the flexible member being flaccid and having substantially no resistance to the generation of the undulatory motion and the distance between the displaced portion and the free edge of the member is at least one half of the wavelength of the undulations. The device may be used for the propulsion of ships or aircraft. Fig. 6 shows a member 31 in which the leading edge is wrapped around a shaft 29 fitted with a radial member 32 which is oscillated; several members may be arranged parallel to each other. Reinforcements may be arranged transversely of the member to provide strengthening. The range of the oscillations of the member 32 may be varied to vary the angle of the neutral axis of the undulations whereby, in the case of propelling aircraft, lift may be provided. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the member is in the form of a cylinder 49, the leading edge being secured to a ring 51 carrying lever devices 55 oscillated by a reciprocating member 53. In an alternative form, the leading edge is attached to a ring, and a ring that can be expanded and contracted is located a short distance from the leading edge.
