Abstract
751,344. Building constructions. FINDLAY, G. K. Oct. 22, 1954, No. 30517/54. Class 20(4). A building construction comprises vertical columns disposed on a concrete base around the sides and ends of the building, horizontal beams connecting the heads only of the columns at the sides of the building, means for connecting the heads of the columns at the ends of the building to the outer sides of the two end beams, horizontal braces extending between the heads of the columns along the sides of the building, walls consti. tuted by uniform slabs of concrete or like material secured in position on the inner and outer surfaces or outer surfaces only of the columns by deformable tensioning members and roof panels secured to timber components fixed transversely across the beams. Vertical columns 1, which as shown are of concrete but may be of steel, are braced at the top of the sides of the building by braces 17 and interconnected by steel beams 10 having extensions 12 lying either side of the columns 1 and secured thereto by bolts 11. The end columns 1 are connected to the end beam 10 by angle plates 15 secured by bolts 16 to the columns and by bolts 14 to timber diaphragms 13 enclosed in the beam 10 which comprises opposed channel shaped members. The bases of the columns 1 are rigidly fixed to concrete foundations 18 and concrete slabs 2 are secured to this framework. The pre-cast slabs 2 are formed with interengaging recesses 3 on their upper and lower edges and are secured in position by means of metal connecting members 4 having their ends anchored at 5 within the inner surfaces of the slabs 2 and which are of a deformable metal and are bent as at 6 to tension the slabs against the columns 1. As shown in Fig. 6, at the top of the ends of the building, the connecting members 4 are secured to bolts 19 fixed in the columns 1. Waterproofing material 7 may be inserted in recesses 8 between the slabs 2 and columns 1 and between the slabs if desired. The corners of the buildings are formed by right-angled slabs 20 with a curved inner wall 21, secured by ties 22 to corner wall blocks 23. Spaces for windows and doors are formed by omitting slabs 2 and fitting appropriate parts, as the window head 31 and sill 32 which are fixed in position between adjacent columns 1. To permit a substantial opening, for example for a loaded vehicle to pass through, a frame of beams may be secured to columns 1 forming the sides of the opening and across the top of the opening, the top beam being fixed to the bases of stub columns which support the roof structure and slab walls. The roof shown comprises panels formed by layers 24 of strawboard or like material covered with layers 25 of waterproof felt, the panels being secured as a flat or slightly inclined roof to timbers which are fixed to the timber diaphragms 13 and timbers fixed to the tops of the columns 1. At its outer edge the roof terminates in a facia board 28 which may be situated close to the uppermost slab 2 or, as shown, be spaced therefrom by a soffit board 29. A gutter 30 may be fixed to the facia board 28. The inner wall of slabs 2 may be omitted and a prefabricated inner lining used according to the use of the building.
