Abstract

751,341. Wooden railway sleepers. SIDERVIA SOC. ANON. Oct. 8, 1954, No. 29036/54. Class 104 (2). A wooden railway sleeper 1 has truncated conical hardwood dowels 3 fitted in the areas receiving sleeper screws 6 or other clamping devices with the interposition of a layer of an adhesive in the holes 2 in the sleeper 1. Grooves 4 are provided on the outer surface of the dowel 3. The holes 2 in the sleeper may be arranged so that the minor diameter of the cone is at the top or bottom of the sleeper 1, thus enabling the dowel to be inserted from the bottom or top of the sleeper 1. The dowels 3 may be cut-away at their upper ends at 9 to accommodate the foot of the rail 7. Adhesive squeezed from between the mating surfaces of the dowel 3 and sleeper 1 form fillets 5 thus prevent water entering between the mating surfaces. The rail 7 may rest directly on the sleeper 1 or on a hardwood saddle 10 held laterally.in position by the dowels 3 and stuck to the sleeper 1. Alternatively, the saddle 10 and the dowels 3 may be formed as a single moulded wood unit. The rail 7 may be held in position by the .screws 6, Fig. 1, or by a resilient member 12 inserted therebetween with one end resting on the foot of the rail 7 and the other end engaging a recess 11 formed in the saddle 10. A grooved rubber pad 13 may be inserted between the rail 7 and the saddle 10.
