Abstract

The invention comprises (a -trifluoromethylbenzhydryloxy) - trialkylamines of the formula <FORM:0751197/IV(a)/1> wherein n is 2 or 3, and each R is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, and hydrohalides thereof, and their preparation by reacting a -trifluoromethylbenzhydrol with an N-(o -haloalkyl)-dialkylamine in the presence of sodium ethoxide and an excess of absolute ethanol, the hydrohalides being prepared, if desired, by introduction of gaseous hydrogen halide into a solution of the amine in diethyl ether. The products are useful in parasiticidal (e.g. fungicidal or bactericidal) compositions. Examples illustrate the preparation of N - [2 - (a - trifluoromethylbenzhydryloxy) - ethyl] - diethylamine and - dimethylamine and their hydrochlorides, N-[3-(a -trifluoromethylbenzhydryloxy) - n - propyl] - diethylamine and its hydroiodide, and N [2-(a -trifluoromethylbenzhydryloxy) - ethyl] - di - n - butylamine and its hydrobromide. a - Trifluoromethylbenzhydrol is prepared from one part by weight of ethyl trifluoroacetate and 2 parts by weight of phenyl magnesium bromide, with decomposition of the resulting Grignard complex with iced hydrochloric acid.
