751,005. Fluid-actuated valves. VICKERSARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Feb. 8, 1954 [Feb. 11, 1953], No. 3868/53. Class 135. In a hydraulic system having a main jack and pull-back jacks, a valve device for controlling the supply and exhaust of pressure liquid to and from the pull-back jacks, comprises a casing 1 having a port 5 connected to the pull-back jacks, a port 25 connected to the main jack and ports 13, 24 alternately connected through a four-way cock either to a liquid pressure source or exhaust. The casing houses a first piston 11 having a valve head 8 urged by a spring 9 on to a seat 10, a second piston 21 having a stem 21A for engagement with the first piston, and a needle valve 18 controlling a port 16 through the valve head 8. The valve 18 is formed with a collar 19 engageable by a spring 20 to urge the collar against the piston 21 and the needle valve into engagement with the valve head 8. On rotation of the four-way cock to connect the port 13 to exhaust and the port 24 to the liquid supply source to supply the main jack pressure eventually builds up in the space 23 between the pistons to initially move the piston 21 against the spring 20 to unseat the valve 18 and permit a restricted opening of the pull-back jacks to exhaust. Further increase in pressure in the space 23 moves the piston 11 against the spring 9 to unseat the valve head 8 and fully open the pullback jacks to exhaust. On rotation of the four-way cock to connect the port 13 to the liquid supply source and the port 24 to exhaust, pressure liquid passes through radial holes 15 in the piston 11 and radial and axial holes 27, 26 in the valve 18 to the rear of the piston 21 to move it to engage the piston 11 to unseat the valve head 8 to supply the pull-back jacks with liquid. At the same time the main jack is connected to exhaust. The needle valve 18 may also be unseated against the spring 20 to relieve excessive pressure on the pull-back jacks. Pressure liquid may be fed direct to the main jack instead of passing through the ports 24, 25, in which case the port 24 is plugged and the port 25 connected by a sensing pipe to the main jack supply line.
