Abstract

The invention comprises a method of chlorinating aceto nitrile with chlorine in presence of hydrogen chloride, the carbon adjacent the nitrile group being completely chlorinated. The starting-material may be saturated with HCl, or may be chlorinated with a mixture of HCl and chlorine. Light is preferably excluded. Examples are given of the chlorination of acetonitrile while saturating it with hydrogen chloride, by a mixture of chlorine and hydrogen chloride, followed by chlorine only, and also in an apparatus illustrated, by a continuous method, to produce trichloroacetonitrile, which may be removed as an azeotropic mixture with acetonitrile. Monochloroacetonitrile may be used as starting material.
