Abstract

750,674. Turning-gear. BOSCH GES., R. June 29, 1954 [July 4, 1953], No. 18965/54. Class 7(5) Arrangement In a starter drive having a sleeve 19 that is both connected by a free wheel clutch 20 to the pinion 16 and threaded on a driving shaft 12, the pinion and associated parts being automatically advanced into driving engagement with the engine gear 22 when it is retarded relatively to the rotation of the driving shaft by a brake comprising friction discs 24, 26 and 27, the braking action is automatically reduced to a given value, but not completely removed, when the pinion and associated parts have been advanced past a predetermined position relative to the driving shaft. Three annular brake discs 24 on bolts 25 are loaded by springs 32 intc frictional engagement with the two further discs 26, 27 that are splined to the sleeve 19, the inner diameter of the disc 27 being greater than the diameter of a collar 30 on the extremity of the sleeve. Operation Upon rotation of the shaft 12 the brake 24-27 prevents turning of the sleeve 19 so that the latter is threaded leftwardly and thus moves the pinion 16 into mesh with the engine gear 22. In the event of tooth abutment the translation of the pinion and associated parts is stopped and these members are caused to rotate until indexing occurs whereupon the pinion is meshed due to the axial force exerted by the threads on the shaft 12; just prior to the pinion abutting a stop 34 the collar 30 passes through the aperture in the disc 27 and contacts the disc 26. When the pinion abuts the stop 34 the disc 26 is displaced so reducing the braking effect on the sleeve. As soon as the engine is selfoperative the pinion 16 rotates freely due to the free-wheel 20 which transmits a disengaging moment to the sleeve but since this moment is smaller than that exerted in the engaging direction by the brake the sleeve is urged toward gear 22 whilst the starting motor is operative. After de-energizing the motor the brake quickly reduces the armature speed and a compressed spring 21 withdraws the pinion; upon completing the initial withdrawal all the discs come into contact and exert a strong braking action on the sleeve.
