Abstract

The invention comprises copper containing complexes of the formula:-Cu(NR-CX=NR1) wherein R and R1 represent the same or different 2-anthraquinonyl radicals which are either unsubstituted or substituted with groups other than the sulphonic acid or acylamino groups and X represents a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or substituted alkyl or aralkyl radical. They are prepared by heating an amide of the formula:-R-NH-CX=N-R1 or an N-alkyl or N-aralkyl derivative with copper or a copper compound using at least one atomic proportion of copper, free or combined, for each molecular proportion of the amidine, and isolating the copper complex formed. The amidine may be prepared in situ from 2-aminoanthraquinones or 1-halogen-2-aminoanthraquinones in presence of ethyl orthoformate or formaldehyde or from the N-alkyl or N-aralkyl derivatives of such anthraquinones. Examples describe the preparation of the same copper complex of N. N1-di(2-anthraquinonyl) formamidine in various ways viz. (1) by making the amide from 2-aminoanthraquinone and ethyl orthoformate, followed by heating with copper bronze or copper acetate in nitrobenzene; (2) in one step from 2-aminoanthraquinone, formaldehyde, and copper bronze, (3) methylation of N, N1-di-(2-anthraquinonyl)-N-methyl-formamidine with methyl, p-toluene sulphonate, followed by heating with copper bronze, (4) making 2, 21-dianthraquinonylaminomethane from 2-aminoanthraquinone and formaldehyde and heating with copper bronze; (5) heating 2-methylaminoanthraquinone or 2- dimethylamino anthraquinone with copper bronze; (6) heating 1-chlor -2- methylamino-anthraquinone, 2-aminoanthraquinone, and cuprous chloride in nitrobenzene, (7) heating 1-chlor-2-methylamino-anthraquinone and cupric chloride in nitrobenzene. Also, (8) N, N1-di(2-anthraquinonyl) benzamidine is heated in nitrobenzene with copper bronze.
