Abstract
Sintered porous thermoplastic polymer sheets (see Group V) are combined as laminations with other sheets of flexible spongy material such as can be made by mixing a pore-forming ingredient with a thermoplastic polymer and a solvent and then removing the ingredient and the solvent so as to leave micro-pores. When a uniformly fine material such as maize starch is used as the pore-forming ingredient the resulting uniform microporosity is a valuable feature for filter diaphragms but the spongy material may lack mechanical strength, but when combined with the sintered thermoplastic sheet the mechanical strength is considerably raised while permeability remains. Specification 565,022, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:A surgical splint comprises a composite porous structure in which sintered porous thermoplastic polymer sheet material (see Group V) is combined with flexible sponge-like sheet material to give a laminated sheet that can be permanently bent by heating to a temperature at which the sintered thermoplastic has softened enough to be movable under light pressure though the sponge-like material remains unaffected; on cooling, the composite sheet retains its new form. The splint is heated and placed on the patient's body with the sponge-like layer next the skin, when it is shaped in situ. Specification 565,022, [Group IV], is referred to.
