Abstract

Jellies or viscous solutions are prepared by mixing at an elevated temperature in an aqueous medium at least two compounds selected from agar-agar, carrageenin (Chondrus extract), sodium carboxy methyl cellulose and gum tragacanth. To the final gel may be added a hydrophilic colloid such as sodium alginate, or an electrolyte such as a soluble calcium salt. The product may be used as a hand jelly, stabiliser for tooth paste, paste shampoo, shaving cream and pastes and creams in general, suspension jelly for canned food products, vehicle for medicaments, surgical lubricant, culture medium, bulk laxative, hair setting lotion or as a thickener for ice-cream, jams, jellies and other food preparations. The second Provisional Specification refers to the production of jellies and viscous solutions from glucose and sucrose in addition to those materials quoted above.
