[Also in Groups XVII and XXX] Sheet - separators.-Blanks A and B are fed to assembly positions from separate magazines M, N in a box-making machine (see Group XVII) by suction heads having a combination of horizontal and vertical movement. The blanks A are stored in an adjustable magazine M (Figs. 3, 5) comprising two portions supported by arms 4 adjustably secured by bolts 5 to the machine bed. The enlarged ends 7 of the arms 4 permit adjustment of the angle at which the lowermost blank is presented to the plane of advance of the blanks through the machine. Each blank is engaged by a suction head C comprising a member 11 reciprocated vertically in a tube 10 by a cam 25 acting on levers 18 pivoted at 17 on a slider 14 and having studs 20 engaging slots 21 in the tube 10. The tube 10 is mounted on the slider, which reciprocates horizontally in guides on the machine bed under the action of a cam 141. The head presents the lowermost blank to rollers D for onward transmission, the next blank in the magazine being held against movement by a finger 31 swung into engagement with the pile by a cam 29 operating through linkage 33, 37-39, the length of the link 37, 38 being adjustable at 41 by a pin-and-slot connection. The blanks B are withdrawn from their magazine N by two suction heads J (Figs. 4, 7) having horizontal and vertical motion. Each head is moved horizontally by a slide 28 operated by a cam 93, the slide being connected to arms 88 between which the head is pivoted. Vertical movement of each head is derived from a cam 23 engaging a stud 24 on each pair of arms 88. Prior to withdrawal, however, the lowermost few blanks are engaged by means to squeeze them transversely to produce bending and separation, ensuring that only the lowest blank is removed. The means (Figs. 7, 8) comprise two fixed stops 161 (only the left hand half of a transverse section of the magazine N is shown in Fig. 8) and two movable stops 162, a stop 161 and 162 engaging the side edges of each portion 160 (Fig. 2) of the blanks B and the stops 162 being slid horizontally inwards by cams 165 acting on rollers 167 attached to the stops.
