Abstract

749,798. Electroluminescence. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1954 [Jan. 22, 1953], No. 120/54. Class 39 (1). A colour filter is located on the external face of a light amplifying device which'comprises a layer of material whose impedance varies with light intensity superimposed on a layer of electroluminescent material, and the two enclosed between laminar electrodes, one of which is light-transmitting. Laminµ of colour filter elements 17, 18, 19 and 20, 21, 22 are formed on one or both sides of the screen which comprises transparent electrode layers 3, 6, a layer 4 of a material, e.g. cadmium, antimony or lead sulphide whose resistance or dielectric constant varies with the amplitude of the incident radiation, and an electroluminescent layer 5. An opaque layer 7 of insulation separates layers 4, 5, but in Fig. 2 (not shown), the layer 7 and filter elements 20, 21, 22 are omitted and the electrode 6 is made opaque, the light emitted by layer 5 passing out through filter elements 17, 18, 19. When feed-back from the electroluminescent layer to the photo-conductive layer is utilized, the alternating potential is applied in pulses of period equal to the saturation time of the electroluminescent layer. The device may be used to convert an image in short, medium and long wave length ultra-violet into a red, green and blue image. It is also used for amplification in colour television projection systems and in motion picture projection. Where the device receives and transmits from one side only, either the photo-sensitive layer or the electroluminescent layer is transparent according to their position relative to the incident radiation.
