Abstract

<PICT:0749513/III/1> Apparatus for the high intensity irradiation of fluids comprises a container 2 for the fluid to be irradiated and narrow passageways, e.g. nickel tubes 1, which confine krypton 85. The walls of the tubes are of such a thickness, e.g. a few thousandths of an inch, that they absorb not more than 60 per cent of the radiation. The tubes extend between headers 3 into which krypton 85 is admitted at 5 under pressure. The fluid to be irradiated enters at 7 and leaves at 8. Substantial equality of pressure between the fluid and the krypton 85 is ensured by control means comprising pressure sensitive devices 11, 12 and valves 6, 9, 10. The apparatus may be surrounded by a protective lead jacket.
