748,904. Fluid-pressure servomotors; valves. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., SIMMONS, A. W., and SHATTOCK, C. F. B. June 3, 1954 [June 19, 1953], No. 16979/53. Class 135. A control valve arrangement for a powerassisted steering gear for a vehicle, said gear being actuated by a pneumatic servomotor of double-acting or twin single-acting type, comprises a valve assembly for, each pressure chamber of the servomotor, each assembly consisting of an operating chamber 9 connected to one of the pressure chambers of the servomotor, a normally closed inlet valve 1 between the chamber 9 and a common supply port 8, an intermediate valve 2 normally connecting the operating chamber with a common equalizing chamber 16, an exhaust valve 19 interconnected with the inlet valve by a rod 4 and normally engaging a fixed seat 3 to seal the operating chamber from an atmospheric exhaust port 18, and a lever 21 enclosed in the equalizing chamber and mounted on a shaft 23 for actuating the valve assemblies. The lever is held horizontally by a spring-loaded plate 27 and engages at opposite ends plungers 10 on which the intermediate valves 2 are formed. Operation of the lever first closes one of the intermediate valves to isolate the corresponding pressure chamber of the servomotor and then opens the exhaust valve 19 of the same valve assembly whereby the equalizing chamber and therefore the other pressure chamber of the servomotor are exhausted so that the servomotor may be operated by the residual pressure in the isolated pressure chamber. If that pressure is insufficient further movement of the lever opens the corresponding inlet valve 1. The lever 21 is returned to its original position by movement of the road wheels of the vehicle.
