Abstract

The invention comprises the calcium salts of N-acyl salicylamides in which the acyl group is that of a saturated open-chain monocarboxylic acid containing not more than six carbon atoms in the molecule, and their preparation by addition of a water-soluble calcium salt of a mineral acid to an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the N-acyl salicylamide, such as the sodium, potassium or ammonium salt, or by neutralization of an aqueous suspension of the N-acyl salicylamide with calcium hydroxide or with the calcium salt of a weak or easily displaced acid, such as calcium carbonate. The preparation of the calcium salts of N-acetyl salicylamide and N-propionyl salicylamide is described in examples, and N-butyryl, N-isovaleryl and N-isobutyryl salicylamides are also referred to. N-Acyl salicylamides are prepared from salicylamide and an acyl halide.
