748,480. Commutators and slip-rings. PANDAPAS, G. J. Oct. 14, 1954, No. 29660/54. Class 35. A commutator or slip-ring assembly is made by electrodepositing conducting material on to an insulating body and on to a conducting member extending into an opening in the body. In Fig. 3, plastic material moulded about an assembly of leads 2 on a supporting wire 1 is machined to form grooves 7, one for each lead, and the material at the bottom of the groove is cut away to expose the lead and a conducting ring 8, e.g. of silver, is electrodeposited in each groove, local insulation of the lead having been removed to unite it electrically to the ring. The assembly may then be machined to clean up the rings 8 which may then be further electroplated with thin layers of platinum rhodium or gold. The insulating body could be preformed and provided with holes or a common bore for the leads. The slip rings could alternatively be radially disposed on a disc. Fig. 12 shows a radial commutator, a moulding 33 having silver alloy plated on both sides and the edge of its disc portion which is then cut through, e.g. by a saw 37, to form radial slots 38 dividing the disc portion into segments.
