Abstract
A paste pigment comprises a pigment that has been wetted and coated with a wetting agent consisting of or containing at least 5 per cent by weight of chlorinated polyphenyl in liquid form or in solution, the proportion of the wetting agent being within the range of 15 to 90 per cent by weight of the paste pigment formed therewith. The chlorinated polyphenyls used include the chlorinated biphenyls and chlorinated polyphenyls having at least two linked phenyl radicals. The pigments include metallic pigments such as aluminium, silver, gold, bronze, lead, antimony, nickel, titanium, copper, iron, stainless steel, beryllium, zinc, tin, chromium, vanadium and tungsten, silica, carbonates and oxides of lead, titanium, iron, barium, copper and other metals; slate dust, steatite and pyrophyllite; black or red copper sulphide; barium sulphide; carbon black, levigated charcoal, or graphite; lead antimoniate, bichromate, chromate and iodide; and ultramarine. Cuprous oxides and copper pentachlorphenate may also be incorporated. The putty-like masses may include organophilic modified clay as described in Specification 664,830. Extenders, additives, diluents, solvents or plasticizers may be added, e.g. chlorinated oils silicone resins, silicone solutions, alkylenes, polyalkylene glycols and their derivatives, unsaturated petroleum polymers, furfural, diphenyl ether, furan, oleo resins, oleic acid, palmitic acid, dibutyl phthalate, amyl acetate and tri-cresyl phosphate. A number of formulae for wetting agents is given, as well as a number of Examples of the pigment compositions. The paste pigments are made by simply mixing or kneading the pigments with the wetting agents in mullers, extrusion mills, tumblers, ball mills, baker's dough-type mixers or the like. The pigment masses of the invention, whether paste- or putty-like, or solid, may be used as ingredients of paints, inks or the like.
