Abstract

747,984. Hydraulic mining. DAWSON, A. S. March 23. 1954 [March 31, 1953], No. 8512/54. Class 68(1) Water-soluble ore is removed from an underground ore bed by first forming a main passage 2 through the ore bed from the foot of a shaft 1, extending from the bottom of the ore bed to the surface, then forming a plurality of secondary passages 3 transverse of and at intervals along the passage 2. and finally dissolving out part of each block of ore between adjacent. secondary passages 3 by passing water through the block. To permit of the entry of water into and the withdrawal of brine but of each block either a hole 5 is drilled betwseen adjacent passages 3 completely through the block, or a pair of intersecting holes are formed in the block from the same passage 3, and a pipe 6 is inserted for a substantial distance into, and sealed within, each end of the bore so formed. The height of the cavity 7 formed within each block is controlled by introducing into the cavity a fluid, which is a non-solvent in respect of the ore and is lighter and immisable with the brine, to form a layer between the brine and the roof of the cavity. Electrodes, situated in the block at the boundary zone to which the cavity be ing formed therein may be safely enlarged, are electrically connected to currentresponsive alarm means. The brine from all the cavities. may drain into a sump at. a level below that of the passages 2 and 3.
