747,933. Surface hardening. PEDDING. HAUS, P. C., and PEDDINGHAUS, W., [trading as PEDDINGHAUS, P. F. [Firm of]]. May 11, 1954 [June 10, 1953], No. 13754/54. Class 72. [Also in Group XXXVII] A machine for surface hardening rotating metallic workpieces, either by surface heating or line heating, comprises an adjustable controlling member movable from an inoperative position into three separate operative positions in the first of which gas and oxygen, in the second water and in the third gas, oxygen, and water are released. As shown a double cam 7, 8 controlled by a handle 6 operates two electric switches 4, controlling gas and oxygen, and 5, controlling water. In the position "O" all switches are open ; in position "I" gas and oxygen are supplied to a burner ; in position "2" water only is supplied to a quench ; and in position "3" gas and oxygen are supplied to a burner and water to a quench. In moving into position "3" water is supplied first and in moving from "3" to "O" gas and oxygen are cut off before the water. The changes "1" to "2" and "2" to "O" may be controlled by a time switch or a quick acting temperature responsive means, and the changes "3" to "2" and "2" to "O" may also be made automatic. The switches 4, 5 may operate magnetic valves. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the cams may be at 45 degrees instead of 180 degrees.
