Abstract

747,567. Hot-water boilers. MAIN WATER HEATERS, Ltd. May 19, 1954 [May 19, 1953], No. 14085/53. Class 64(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a continuous-flow gasfired water heater in which hot gases from burner jets 44 flow through a heatexchange unit comprising spaced metal fins 13 in thermal contact with one or more water pipes 10, an inner jacket wall 15 surrounding the heat-exchange unit extends below the fins 13 and terminates higher than the burner jets, and one or more outer jacket walls 23, 27 are spaced from the inner wall 15 and extend lower than the burner jets to form, at least at the front, a passage or a plurality of passages 26, 28, one in front of another, for the upward flow of cooling air. In the form shown, the passage 26 also extends around the side and back of the inner wall 15. A curved baffle 33 is provided above the heat-exchange unit. The hotwater delivery pipe 41 has an upwardly bent part between its union with one end of the U- shaped pipe 10 and its downwardly directed delivery end, so that the pipe 10 is always maintained full of water. The gas valve 45 and cold water valve 39 have parallel axes of rotation, and handles 46, 53 which interlock, so that the gas can only be on when the water is running. The water valve has a screw-threaded spindle with a handle 53 which is out of the path of the gas-valve handle 46 only when the water valve is open. When the gas valve is fully open its handle 46 is in the axial path of the handle 53, so that the water cannot be turned off until the gas cock is closed.
