Abstract

747,370. Dielectric heating. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Jan. 12, 1954 [Nov. 12, 1953], No. 858/54. Class 39(3). [Also in Group V] Fig. 3 shows means for heating plastic preforms 102 and feeding them to charging chamber 104 whence they are forced by a hydraulically-operated ram 103 through narrow passages into a mould cavity. The preforms are taken one by one from the bottom of a magazine 108 by a feeder 110 carried by endless chains 111. The feeder pushes a preform from the magazine leftward to a position between an upper highfrequency-heating electrode 112 and a lower earthed electrode 118, and then the feeder (leaving the preform between the eletrodes) retracts to the right, this retraction being effected by a dog 120 on the chains, this dog actuating a switch 121 to reverse an electric motor which drives the chains. When the receding feeder reaches a limit switch 124, it actuates this switch which stops the motor and energises the heater 112. The preform is thus heated for, say, 10-15 seconds, whereupon the motor re-starts to advance the feeder again to the left. The feeder moves the heated preform to the chamber 104, the preform drops into the chamber and the feeder travels around the lefthand chain sprocket until it is out of the way of ram 103, whereupon dog 120 actuates a switch 128 to cause descent of plunger 103 to fill the mould cavity. The chains continue to move, the feeder is carried around right-hand sprocket 117 and takes another preform to the heating station, the feeder retracts, the second preform is heated, and so on.
