Abstract

747,150. Centrifugal separators; washing granular materials. STAMICARBON N.V. April 15, 1954 [April 20, 1953], No. 11211/54. Classes 23 and 82(2). Fine solid particles suspended in a liquid and which settle in the liquid with a velocity which is substantially governed by Stokes' law are separated according to shape in a centrifuge or hydro-cyclone. A suspension a of fine solid particles comprising coarser round, coarser flat, finer round and finer flat particles is passed through a hydrocyclone 7 arranged to operate so that the coarser round particles are discharged at h. The fraction k from the hydro-cyclone is passed to a screen 8 discharging coarser flat particles at l. The underflow from the screen is fed to a hydrocyclone 10 which discharges fine flat particles at m and finer round particles at n. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the mixture is fed to a classifier and separated into fractions containing coarser round and flat particles, and finer round and flat particles, and the fractions are separated in hydro-cyclones. Quartz and felspar, and flour and fibre mixtures having respective size ranges of 10-100Á and 5-10Á are given as mixtures separable according to the invention.
