Abstract

747,105. Laminated materials. HANSEN, H. L. M. Aug. 24, 1953 [Aug. 25, 1952], No. 23265/53. Class 140. Laminated material comprising two sheets of thermoplastic synthetic resin such as polyvinyl chloride or polythene locally united to form gas-filled pockets is made by forming a tube of thermoplastic synthetic resin by extrusion and feeding said tube between tools having elevations or cams for locally pressing the walls of the tube together, while at the same time blowing air or gas into the tube, the tools being close to the extrusion nozzle so that the tube walls are sufficiently warm to effect uniting and the tools being arranged to cool the material so that the uniting is maintained when the tube leaves the walls. As shown, Fig. 4, the extruder 4 has an annular mouthpiece 5 into which air or gas is blown through a pipe 6 and a central passage 7. The extruded tube 8 is passed between rollers 9 and 10 which unite the walls locally. Each roller consists of a cylindrical drum 11 having elevations 12 on its outer surface and mounted for rotation on a stationary tube 13 having a longitudinal slot 14. At the bottom of each recess between the elevations 12 a passage 15 is formed. Suction is effected through tube 13 and passages 15 as the drum 11 revolves, thus giving the air pockets the desired shape. The tube 13 also is formed with a longitudinal passage 16 through which compressed air is introduced to assist the material in leaving the roller after the uniting operation. Roller 9 may be constructed in the same way, or may be smooth if it is not necessary to have a high amount of air filling in the pockets. A modification employing endless belts constructed on the same principle as the rollers is described.
