In apparatus for the automatic transmission of Morse code signals by the opening and closing of a transmitting circuit by the direct actuation of movable contact makers slidable upon code bars with conducting and non- conducting portions, each key lever has a toothed wheel 5 meshing with a toothed rack 6 carrying the contact maker 7 and also a gearwheel 4 engaging the wheel 5 and brought into mesh with a gear 1 constantly rotating on the depression of the lever 2. The operated lever 2 is latched by a lever 3 and after the contact member 7 has traversed the conducting and insulating portions of the bar 8 to effect the transmission of the appropriate current impulses via terminals 17, 18, it engages a rod 9 and its support member 7 is rocked about a pivot 26 so that a tooth on a detent arm 12 drops behind a projection 13 on the rack bar 6. At the same time an arm 10 on the bar 6 engages a pivoted member 11 which is rocked so that its upper end rotates the latch member 3 to release the actuated key lever 2 to return to its normal position in which gear-wheel 4 is disengaged from the gear 1. The rack 6 is moved to the right by a spring 22 and a leafspring 14 engages a rod 15 so that the arm 12 connected to the contact member 7 is returned to its normal position with the tooth resting on the projection 13. The detent lever is held against lateral movement by a spring 23.
