Abstract
746, 293. Grinding machine headstocks. FORTUNA-WERKE SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Jan. 18, 1954 [Jan. 28, 1953], No. 1408/54. Class 60 A grinding machine has a headstock with a spring- loaded sleeve 13, Fig. 6, which co-operates with a spring- loaded tailstock sleeve to bring one end of a workpiece 7 into contact with an abutment 25 in order that each of a series of workpieces may be positioned in the same relationship with the grinding wheel, and a single operating member 48, Fig. 5, which actuates in succession a first means to prevent axial movement of the sleeve 13 in a direction away from the tailstock and a second means to relieve the workpiece from pressure by the abutment 25. The sleeve 13 is loaded by a spring 28 which may be adjusted by a screw 27, Fig. 4, and is mounted inside a hollow spindle 11 with which it is connected by a slot 14 and a screw 15. When the workpiece is mounted in the machine the sleeve 13 is displaced to the left by the pressure of the tailstock sleeve until the workpiece engages the abutment 25. The member 48, which consists of a lever pivoted to the headstock and provided with two dogs 46 to engage a groove 45 in a clamping sleeve 42, is then operated to cause an adjustable wedge member 51 to force a ball 41 into a recess between two members 33 which are thus urged apart against the resistance of a spring 34 so that they are firmly clamped against the interior of the spindle 11. Further movement of the sleeve 42 now causes one or more balls 39 to be depressed by a conical surface 49 into a tapered annular recess formed by a surface 36 on the clamped member 33 and a surface 32 on the member 11 so that the latter, is moved to the right by predetermined amount and the workpiece is supported by a centre 9 free of the abutment 25. The spindle 11 is rotated by a belt-driven pulley 17 provided with a work-driving mechanism 18, 19 and 20. A spring washer 21 and a spring ring 22 hold the centre 9 in the sleeve 13 which is provided with a sealing sleeve 23. The tailstock may be fluid or hand operated.
