746,133. Door-operating apparatus. CASTON BARBER, Ltd. April 14, 1954 [March 8, 1954], No. 6725/54. Class 65 (1). Means for closing a door, particularly a heavy fireproof door, by dead-weight means, comprises a flexible cable g connecting the door to a weight formed in two or more parts including an upper weight c supported freely on a lower weight d and having a passage k through which the cable passes to a fixture on the lower weight, the arrangement being such that all the weights are effective during the first part of the closing movement, but the movement is completed by one weight only, so that slamming is avoided. In the arrangement shown, the weight c is supported by a tube i resting on the weight d and is arrested by stops m at a suitable point during the movement. The weights are guided in a tube e. More than two weights may be used, all but one being successively rendered ineffective.
