Abstract
746,048. Flexible ladders. GLOVER BROS. (MOSSLEY), Ltd. May 21, 1954 [May 21, 1953], No. 14376/53. Class 20(2). A flexible ladder is made up of rectangular frames of stiff sheet material (e.g. sheet metal, or a light alloy or other metal casting) each having tread portions projecting in opposite directions to each other from the upper edges of its upper and lower transverse members, these frames being hingedly connected by pairs of links (e.g. of metal rod, strip or wire) arranged one at each side, the dimensions being such that the frames can be swung about the links to nest on one another with the corresponding treads overlapping. Fig. 1 shows a sheet metal blank from which a finished frame is made by bending down the treads 11, 12 in opposite directions; Fig. 5, the frames a, b, c are connected by circular section metal rods 13, the eyes at the ends of which are brazed, welded &c., after they have been passed through apertures 7c, 7d and 8c, 8d in adjacent frames. The frames may be built up from parts welded, brazed, clamped &c., together, e.g. four parts each with an apertured circular portion at both ends (according to the Provisional Specification, such a frame may be held together merely by passage of the links 13 through coincident apertures) ; the treads may also be formed separately and welded &c., to the frames. Flexible cables or chains may be used to form the links 13.
