Abstract
745,917. Electric tests. INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1954 [Feb. 24, 1953], No. 5169/53. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (b)] Apparatus for measuring percentage moisture content comprises two gauges one giving an output proportional to the weight per unit area and the other to the amount of moisture in the material under test, the outputs of the two gauges being so combined as to give an output proportional to percentage humidity. The invention is described with reference to determining the moisture content of a moving stream of tobacco. The gauge for determining weight per unit area is a known beta ray gauge and the moisture gauge is a known dielectric or resistance gauge. The output of the beta ray gauge is developed across a potentiometer 8 and that of the moisture gauge is applied directly to the grid of a triode V2. Part of the potential developed across potentiometer 8 is tapped and applied to a further triode 10. Between the cathode of the triodes is connected the winding of a polarized relay 19 the moving element of which engages one or the other of a pair of contacts to energize one of the windings of an alternating current motor 13 which drives potentiometer slider 8 in such a way as to balance out the difference voltage and recentralize the relay contact. A further potentiometer 23 is simultaneously adjusted and a meter 27 in series with this slider and the supply indicates percentage moisture. If the two gauges operate at spaced points along a moving strip one of the gauges is connected to a delaying device which may be as described in Specification 744,311. The Specification mentions that the moisture content of textile fabrics, synthetic plastic materials, the formed cigarette rod of a continuous rod cigarette-making machine, and paper, may be measured. Specification 558,491 is referred to.
