Abstract

A conductive element is formed by depositing a porous metal layer on a porous flexible base, impregnating the layer with a dielectric material, and removing the base from the layer either before or after the impregnation. The base may consist of paper or asbestos fibre sheet; the metal may be sprayed, or deposited in solid or molten condition, or by sintering a layer of metal powder, and is preferably thin enough to pass light. It may be deposited on one or both sides of the base. Removal of the base may be by combustion, solution or mechanical separation. The metal layer may be rolled or ground smooth, and impregnated with molten wax, varnish, enamel, celulose acetate, urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde or other liquid or solid dielectric material. Impregnation may be effected by passing the layer through a pressurised extrusion machine head to provide a uniform coating of plastic material. The electrode may be used for capacitors or coils, and may be interleaved with spacers; impregnation may be effected after the electrodes and spacers are wound or otherwise assembled. Non-inductive windings may be used, and the electrode strips may be extended to provide terminals.
