Abstract

The invention comprises chloro copper phthalocyanines analysing not substantially less than one and not substantially more than three chlorine atoms per molecule, said chlorine being located in the benzene nuclei, in positions meta to the nearest cyano group. These products are tinctorially stable and are prepared by subjecting to the urea synthesis a mixture of (a) cupric chloride, (b) phthalic acid, monoammonium phthalate, diammonium phthalate, phthalic anhydride, phthalamide, or phthalimide, and (c) 4 - chlorphthalic acid, mono- or di-ammonium 4 - chlorphthalate, 4 - chlorphthalic anhydride, 4 - chlorphthalamide, or 4 - chlorphthalimide, said synthesis being effected with 15-40 mols of urea per mol. of cupric chloride at a temperature not above 190 DEG C., in an inert organic medium, the molar proportion of compound (c) to that of compound (b) being not substantially less than 1:3 and not substantially more than 3:1. A catalyst such as ammonium molybdate may be present. Organic media specified are nitrobenzene, o-nitrotoluene, trichlorbenzene, o-dichlorbenzene, and kerosene. In examples, 4-chlorphthalic acid monosodium salt is reacted with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, phthalic anhydride, urea, ammonium molybdate and cupric chloride in such proportions as to give mono-, di-, and tri-chlor copper phthalocyanines. In further examples, 4-chlorphthalimide, or 4-chlorphthalic anhydride replaces the monosodium 4-chlorphthalate in the preparation of the monochlor body.
