Abstract

A polymeric composition consists of more than 80 per cent of polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer containing more than 85 per cent of acrylonitrile, e.g. with vinyl acetate, and less than 20 per cent but more than 0.2 per cent of a polyamide, polyurethane, polyurea or polyester, which contains in its main carbon chain nitrogen atoms of which more than two valence bonds are attached to carbon atoms. Specified are (a) a polyurethane made by condensing hexamethylene diisocyanate with methyl diethanolamine, (b) a polyamide made by condensing gamma, gamma1 - diaminopropyl methylamine with a 1:1 mixture of nonane and decane dicarboxylic acids, (c) a polyester made by condensing adipic acid, ethylene glycol and methyl diethanolamine, and reacting this product with hexamethylene diisocyanate, and (d) a mixed polyester-polyurethane obtained by reacting the polyester described in (c) above with a polyurethane made by condensing methyl diethanolamine with hexamethylene diisocyanate. Other polyesters which may be used are those obtained by reacting together polyesters, which may contain tertiary nitrogen groups, with diisocyanates containing tertiary nitrogen groups. The compositions are made by dissolving the components in dimethyl formamide, and from the solutions so produced may be spun fibres which are dyeable with acid dyestuffs.
