Abstract

Surfaces are coated with a decorative or protective paint comprising a chlorinated rubber undercoat adherent to the surface and superimposed thereon a polyvinyl acetate film physically and chemically compatible with the undercoat. The chlorinated rubber may be applied as a solution to which alkyd resins, drying oils such as linseed or tung, perilla, oiticica and the like or chlorinated paraffins, may be added; either layer may contain plasticizers, pigments, extenders and fillers. The polyvinyl acetate may be applied as a solution or as an emulsion. In examples, a medium composed of chlorinated natural rubber, "Paralac" (Registered Trade Mark), and xylol, is pasted with anatase type titanium dioxide and sharp-particle silica of particle size between 0.7 and 30 microns more medium then being incorporated; in another formulation the medium also contains dibutyl phthalate. In a further formula, a mixture of chlorinated rubber, chlorinated paraffin and xylol is suitably pigmented and mixed with diatomite. The polyvinyl acetate may be in the form of a clear film obtained by coating with, e.g. a solution of polyvinyl acetate, butyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate in xylol; or with a plasticized polyvinyl acetate emulsion. The solutions of polyvinyl acetate may be pigmented by known methods; in pigmenting emulsions, the pigments are pasted with a solution of gum acacia in water, or with water and a suitable wetting agent, and the paste added with stirring to the polyvinyl acetate emulsion. In exemplary formulae, a pigment which may be rutile titanium dioxide, is incorporated in a polyvinyl acetate emulsion, plasticized with dibutyl phthalate. The coatings may be applied by brushing or spraying.
