Abstract

Resinous products are stated to be obtained by condensing sulphur halides with 3-methyl-6-substituted-phenols in which the substituent is a branched chain alkyl group of 8-12 carbon atoms attached via a secondary or tertiary carbon atom.ALSO:The invention comprises bis-(3-methyl-6-substituted-phenol)-sulphides in which the 6-substituent is a branched chain alkyl group of 8-12 carbon atoms attached via a secondary or teriary carbon atom, and their production by treatment of the corresponding phenols with sulphur halides, e.g. the mono- or di-chloride. In examples: (1) m-cresol is alkylated with diisobutylene in the presence of sulphuric acid and the product condensed with sulphur dichloride; (2) m-cresol is condensed with triisobutylene in the presence of boron trifluoride and the product condensed with sulphur dichloride; (3) 2:6-dimethylheptene-2 (from dehydration of di-isobutyl carbinol over alumina) is reacted with m-cresol in sulphuric acid and the product condensed with sulphur dichloride. The sulphides are anti-oxidants for oils and rubber.ALSO:Antioxidants for mineral oils, vegetable oils and soap comprise bis-(3-methyl-6-substituted-phenol)-sulphides in which the substituent is a branched chain alkyl group of 8-12 carbon atoms attached via a secondary or tertiary carbon atom.ALSO:Bis-(3-methyl-6-substituted-phenol)-sulphides in which the substituent is a branched chain alkyl group of 8-12 carbon atoms attached via a secondary or tertiary carbon atom, are used as antioxidants for elastomers such as natural or reclaimed rubber, balata, gutta-percha and butadiene-styrene copolymers. They may be incorporated in the same way as those of Specification 740,155. In examples, sulphides where the 6-substituent is t-octyl, nonyl (mixed secondary and tertiary) and t-dodecyl are blended with smoked sheet rubber, zinc oxide, lithopone, sulphur, diphenylguanidine phthalate, benzoylthio-benzthiazole and paraffin, and the mixture vulcanized.
