745,187. Road-surfaces; paving blocks. LANEN, C. J. W., and DOORNBOS, J., [trading as NEDERLANDS OCTROOI-EXPLOITATIE BUREAU WORLD LOOK]. Oct. 13, 1953, No. 28173/53. Classes 87(1) and 107. A road surface is made up of a number of blocks 1 of concrete or artificial stone arranged behind each other in adjacent rows extending in the direction of the road, the longitudinal axes of the elements in each row being in alignment and adjacent rows being staggered for half the length of an element. The underside of the surface is provided with a number of parallel protruding ribs extending through at least one traffic lane, the ribs being composed of separate aligned portions 3 integral with the paving elements 1 and obliquely arranged with regard to the longitudinal axis of the traffic lane. A parting strip 17 may be used between adjacent lanes. The paving element shown in Fig. 2 has three such rib portions 2, 3, 4, 2 and 4 being arranged to run from one corner of the element to intersect the opposite wall of the block and 3 running across the block to cut the side walls at right angles. Lugs 8, 10 are provided on the blocks to engage stepwise to spread the load and prevent tilting of individual blocks. Grooves 5, 6, 7 are provided across the block to prevent skidding. The direction of the traffic is indicated by the arrows R and the resultant sideways force on the blocks forces them tightly into contact.
